July brought with it a large group of vacationing Rolfsons, which made our lives very eventful. One of these events was a hike up Crags trail near Pike Peak. Our adventure began with lunch and applying thick layers of sunscreen on every hiker, young and old. The small patch of sky we could see above the pinetops was clear and promising. About halfway up the trail, however, the weather took a turn. Lightning began striking closer and closer. Cold rain became pelting hail and the littlest hikers started praying for our survival. :) We bunkered down under the thickest branches we could find, laughing about the unexpected change in our plans and comforting the youngsters.
After waiting for the storm to calm, we gave up and tried to outrun the hail to get back to our vehicles before everyone was frozen. Oh, how we wished we had as many jackets on as we did layers of sunscreen. In the end, we all survived. It only took about 20 minutes of thawing and lauging in our warm cars until everyone was in good spirits once again. I guess all those little prayers worked!
